What is Urticaria?

Urticaria, commonly known as Hive or weal, usually appears to be a bumpy, red, itchy patch or rash over the skin which further grows into a welt having defined borders. These can develop on any part of the skin varying in size from few millimetres to the size of a hand. Urticaria can be categorised as follows:

Acute Urticaria: These rashes do not last for more than six weeks and gets cleared within the duration. It predominantly is caused due to allergens from food, medication or infections and usually affects younger people. What causes Urticaria?

Histamine is released in various conditions, such as an allergic reaction to food or drug, reaction to an insect bite or sting, cold or heat exposure, infection (influenza, hepatitis B), intestinal parasites, dust mites and certain medications – such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or antibiotics
