What are the different types of Arthritis?

Arthritis is majorly distinguished into two types as follows:

Osteoarthritis

OA is the most common condition of arthritis found in elderly people, which occurs due to gradual loss of cartilage- a smooth and elastic rubber like structure which enacts as a cushion and covers the bones of the joints to absorb shock and pressure on the bones. Reduction of normal amount of cartilage brings stiffness, impaired movement, makes the joints to rub with each other on movement, may also alter the shape of the joints and dislocate the bones from their actual position.

The joints of spine, hands, knees and hips are commonly affected in this condition.

Rheumatoid

Nearly seven million people in India are suffering from RA, an autoimmune disorder and another prevailing form of arthritis in India. Joint cavity of bones is surrounded by a joint line membrane of synovium, responsible to produce fluid which makes movement of bones smoother by lubricating the joints. When the synovium gets thickened and inflamed it produces large amount of fluid which results into stiffness, swelling, pain and ultimately destroys and causes deformities to bones and cartilage.

RA generally afflicts people of 30-40 years and uncontrolled condition may also cause risk of heart attack. Joints of ankles, fingers, heels, elbow and wrists are commonly affected by RA.
